Ubisoft is undergoing a major restructuring, leading to the cancellation of several projects, including the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The move signals a strategic shift towards focusing on large-scale, open-world experiences and live service games, as the company aims to streamline its operations and bolster its key franchises. This decision comes after years of developmental challenges and shifting priorities for the French gaming giant.

Creative Houses and Canceled Titles

Ubisoft's new operating model, set to take effect in April, will be structured around five "Creative Houses." These houses will function as independent business units, each dedicated to specific game genres and supported by a "Creative Network" for development resources and shared services. According to The Verge, this network will consolidate resources to better support key brands, including those managed by Vantage Studios, which is backed by Tencent and oversees franchises like Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry.

The cancellation of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is perhaps the most prominent casualty of this reorganization, but it's not alone. Engadget reports that a total of six games have been axed, including three original IPs and one mobile title. While Ubisoft has not yet released the names of the other canceled titles, the decision underscores a refocusing of development efforts on established franchises and proven revenue streams. The remake had been in development hell since its initial announcement in 2020, struggling to gain traction and facing numerous setbacks.

Delays and Studio Restructuring

In addition to the cancellations, Ubisoft has also announced delays for seven other games. Engadget notes that one of these delayed titles was originally slated for release in the first quarter of this year but is now pushed back to before April 2027. While the specific titles remain unconfirmed, speculation suggests that the heavily rumored remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag could be among those facing delays.

The restructuring also involves significant changes to Ubisoft's studio structure. As reported by Engadget, the company is closing its Stockholm and Halifax studios, the latter of which recently unionized. Other studios, including Massive Entertainment, the developer behind Star Wars Outlaws, are also slated for restructuring. The impact on staffing levels remains unclear, as Ubisoft has declined to specify the number of potential layoffs, according to Engadget.

"The cancellation of the *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time* remake is perhaps the most prominent casualty of this reorganization, but it's not alone."

— Context

This strategic realignment reflects Ubisoft's commitment to adapting to the evolving gaming landscape. By concentrating on established brands and streamlining its operations, the company aims to achieve greater efficiency and profitability. According to Bloomberg, Ubisoft anticipates net bookings of approximately €1.5 billion for the fiscal year 2025-2026. Whether this reorganization will ultimately revitalize Ubisoft and secure its long-term success remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly marks a significant turning point for the company.
