Uber is stepping into the autonomous vehicle arena, revealing its robotaxi design at CES 2026. A Tripartite Collaboration: Lucid, Nuro, and Uber
The collaboration leverages each company's strengths: Lucid provides the electric vehicle platform (a modified Gravity), Nuro contributes its autonomous driving technology ("Nuro Driver"), and Uber integrates the robotaxi into its existing ride-hailing network. The scale is ambitious, with plans to deploy at least 20,000 Lucid EVs equipped with Nuro's self-driving capabilities. On-road testing, using over 100 supervised prototypes, has been underway in the Bay Area since last month. This real-world data is crucial for refining the AI models and ensuring safety.
Tech Specs and Rider Experience
The robotaxi boasts a comprehensive sensor suite, including high-resolution cameras, lidar, and radar, all crucial for robust perception. A distinctive halo mounted on the roof enhances sensor visibility and doubles as a display, communicating information to passengers via LEDs. Inside, the design prioritizes passenger comfort and control. "Uber designed the 'in-vehicle rider experience,' which can accommodate six passengers and luggage space," according to Engadget. A central display allows passengers to adjust climate control, select music, and even view the robotaxi's planned route and driving decisions in real-time. Production and Deployment
While the design is awaiting final validation, production is scheduled to begin at Lucid's Arizona factory later this year. The robotaxi will be on display throughout CES 2026 before its anticipated launch in late 2026.
