OpenAI has introduced the Rosalind Academic Plan to provide eligible research labs at U.S. universities access to its GPT-Rosalind model, according to the OpenAI Help Center.

The model allows life sciences teams to reason across biological data and coordinate workflows across scientific tools, databases, and literature. These capability descriptions are provided by OpenAI and have not been independently tested.

OpenAI is moving toward specialized models for scientific domains to replace general-purpose LLM workflows with those that incorporate deep scientific reasoning and tool use. The company's broader effort to integrate AI into research has previously included the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program and ChatGPT Edu, though the Rosalind Academic Plan is a separate Business-based offer with its own verification requirements, according to the OpenAI Help Center.

GPT-Rosalind supports genomics and sequencing analysis, protein and sequence analysis, medicinal chemistry, and experiment planning. The model is available in ChatGPT and Codex. Access via the OpenAI API requires separate approval and is not included in the Rosalind Academic Plan, which also excludes API credits.

Institutional customers with existing Enterprise or Business agreements can request the model through a trusted-access program. For U.S. university labs without an Enterprise agreement, the Academic Plan requires application by a principal investigator or lab lead. The OpenAI Help Center does not list pricing for the Business-based offer.

OpenAI also introduced the Rosalind Workbench in Codex and ChatGPT. This workspace includes guided workflows for next-generation sequencing, including FASTQ quality control, bulk RNA sequencing, and single-cell RNA sequencing.
