OpenAI held back a version of its Astra model after safety evaluations, Bloomberg reported on Sept. 29, as Nvidia said on Oct. 1 that GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available now.
The distinction matters because the two reports describe different parts of the same model line. Bloomberg said a version known as GPT-6.1 Astra was held back after underperforming the current iteration on safety evaluations, while Nvidia described a shipping "Ultrafast" mode for GPT-6 Astra tied to inference speed rather than a new base-model release.
According to Bloomberg Technology, OpenAI held back GPT-6.1 Astra because it "failed to perform as well on safety evaluations as the current iteration." Bloomberg also said the version improved on "model laziness," which it described as failing to complete a task. The Bloomberg item is a video post with excerpted text; it does not include underlying test results.
By contrast, Nvidia said in a company post that GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available now in the OpenAI API and to eligible ChatGPT Work and Codex users. Nvidia said the offering runs on Blackwell GPUs and delivers up to 8x faster token generation than Astra Standard mode. Nvidia's announcement includes no independent test results.
Nvidia attributed the speedup to inference optimizations using the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and said faster generation can shorten coding agents' edit-test-debug cycles. The post quoted OpenAI personnel describing internal model-driven optimization of inference software on Nvidia GPUs, but provided no benchmark configuration beyond the comparison to "Astra Standard mode."
The available reports do not directly conflict on dates or product names, but they leave key questions unanswered, including whether GPT-6.1 Astra and GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast are separate releases, the safety test conditions Bloomberg referenced, and whether OpenAI plans to revisit the held-back version.
Automatica reported on Oct. 1 that OpenAI and SBDC partnered on a small-business AI training pilot, illustrating that OpenAI has continued announcing other initiatives while details around Astra's model roadmap remain limited.
