Meta announced Petal on Sept. 21, a planned subsea cable that the company said would connect France and the United States over about 7,000 km by 2029 Meta Engineering.
Meta said Petal would deliver 1 Pbps at transoceanic distance, which it characterized as double what today's most advanced subsea cables carry at this distance. The company said Petal would be the first transoceanic subsea cable at petabit capacity and the first subsea cable system to deploy multi-core fiber technology at scale.
Meta said the design would double capacity per fiber without a proportional increase in power or physical infrastructure. According to Meta Engineering, the system will be built with NEC and Sumitomo Electric Industries, with Orange supporting the French landing.
