Canon is celebrating three decades of digital photography innovation by releasing a special, limited-edition G7 X III compact camera.

A Nod to the Past, A Glimpse of the Future

Canon's journey into digital imaging began in 1996 with its first PowerShot camera, a humble 0.5-megapixel device that signaled the dawn of a new era for photography. Now, 30 years later, the company is honoring this legacy with a sophisticated, limited edition of its beloved PowerShot G7 X III.

This special iteration sports a new "graphite" finish, exuding an air of luxury and quality that Canon aims to convey. A subtle 30th-anniversary logo adorns the body, adding a unique touch for collectors. While the aesthetics are refined, the core technology remains the same as the original model, which first hit the market nearly seven years ago.

The Vlogger's Choice, Revisited

The G7 X III originally carved out a significant niche as a camera designed with vloggers in mind. Its ability to capture vertical video, ideal for platforms like Instagram, was a forward-thinking feature at the time. Under the hood, it boasts a 20.1MP sensor, a versatile 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens, and a convenient flip-up 3-inch touchscreen.

For videographers, the camera offers robust capabilities, including uncropped 4K video at 30 fps and 1080p footage at a smooth 120 fps. Perhaps its most groundbreaking feature upon release was the direct streaming capability to YouTube over Wi-Fi, a functionality that has since become commonplace.

Enduring Popularity and a Premium Price Tag

Interestingly, the G7 X III experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly among influencers, several years after its initial release. This demand led to shortages and used models selling for prices significantly above their original retail value. Responding to this sustained interest, Canon increased production in August 2025, making the camera more readily available at its then-current price of $880.

However, this new Limited Edition G7 X III commands a considerably higher price point of $1,299. This premium includes a specially designed Peak Design cuff wrist strap and a 32GB SD card, aiming to justify the elevated cost for enthusiasts and collectors.

Canon also introduced two new full-frame RF-mount lenses alongside the camera: the ultra-wide RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM prime lens for $2,599, promising exceptional optical quality, and the intriguing RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM zoom lens for $1,899, which offers a vast 190-degree perspective at its widest setting.

Shipping for the Limited Edition G7 X III is slated to begin in April 2026. This release underscores Canon's commitment to both its historical achievements and its ongoing relevance in the ever-evolving digital imaging landscape. As technology advances, it is important to remember the devices that paved the way and the enduring appeal they hold for creators and enthusiasts alike.
