LAS VEGAS—At CES 2026, ASUS and XREAL unveiled a collaboration poised to redefine portable gaming: the ROG XREAL R1 AR smartglasses. Targeting gamers who demand high performance on the go, these glasses pack impressive specs and innovative features. The partnership addresses a critical gap in the smartglass market, where gaming-specific features are often an afterthought.

High Refresh Rate and Visual Fidelity

Building upon the XREAL One Pro, the ROG XREAL R1 boasts dual micro-OLED displays with 1920x1080 resolution per eye. However, the standout upgrade is its 240Hz refresh rate, a significant leap from the typical 120Hz found in competitors. This enhanced refresh rate promises smoother visuals, especially crucial for fast-paced games. As Engadget's Sam Rutherford notes, the glasses deliver "very easy to use and relatively streamlined kit," weighing in at only 91 grams.

Beyond refresh rate, the R1 maintains a 57-degree field of view and 700-nit peak brightness, delivering a vibrant and immersive experience. Integrated Bose-tuned speakers add to the sensory immersion. Electrochromic lenses allow users to adjust the tint, optimizing visibility in various lighting conditions. The glasses also support three degrees of freedom, enabling users to anchor the virtual screen or have it follow their movements.

ROG Control Dock: A Connectivity Hub

ASUS and XREAL also introduced the ROG Control Dock alongside the R1 smartglasses. The dock features two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 connector, and dual USB-C ports (one for power), enabling seamless switching between devices like PCs and consoles. Rutherford from Engadget found the dock better suited for home use but notes the R1s can connect directly to compatible devices such as the ROG Ally X via USB-C. Gamers can enjoy a streamlined setup whether at home or on the move.

While a 57-degree field of view is offered, it's worth noting that some may find that it could be a bit bigger, as Rutherford points out in his hands-on. Yet, the glasses are still capable of projecting a 171-inch virtual screen from four meters away. Of course, the 240Hz refresh rate is contingent on the connected hardware's capabilities. Users with older systems might not fully realize the glasses' potential. Still, during hands-on testing connected to a PC, Rutherford was able to “really appreciate the smoothness you get from faster refresh rates.”

"The ROG XREAL R1 AR smartglasses represent a compelling fusion of ASUS's gaming expertise and XREAL's AR technology."

The ROG XREAL R1 AR smartglasses represent a compelling fusion of ASUS's gaming expertise and XREAL's AR technology. While pricing and availability remain unannounced, the R1's combination of high refresh rate, visual fidelity, and versatile connectivity options make it a promising contender in the burgeoning market for portable gaming displays. If the price remains competitive with the XREAL One Pro, as speculated, these glasses could become a must-have for gamers on the go. The integration of RGB lighting adds a final touch of ROG flair, solidifying its appeal to the gaming community. This collaboration could set a new benchmark for gaming-focused AR wearables, pushing the boundaries of immersive mobile gaming.
