The AirTag 2 boasts Apple's latest Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same found in the iPhone 17 lineup and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, significantly boosting its capabilities. This new chip enables Precision Finding to locate items up to 50 percent further away than the original AirTag, a noticeable improvement for those prone to misplacing their belongings. Moreover, Apple claims the new tag is 50 percent louder and features a “distinctive new chime,” making it easier to locate even when buried under couch cushions. The Verge notes the enhanced Precision Finding will also work with Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or newer models, extending the benefits to a wider range of users.
Good News and Bad News for Upgraders
According to 9to5Mac, deciding whether to upgrade existing AirTags to the new model is a matter of weighing the pros and cons. The improved Bluetooth range and louder speaker are definite pluses, but the lack of a built-in keyring hole remains a significant drawback. Users will still need to invest in an external holder, adding to the overall cost. This upgraded Siri is expected to debut in iOS 26.4, with beta testing starting in February and a public release in March or early April.
